چکیده

Abstract-A solution to the equations of elastic equilibrium is developed in terms of two harmonic functions, such that on a certain plane, normal stresses are identically zero, whilst tangential stresses and displacements are expressible as simple derivatives. The solution is used to solve the problem of the penny-shaped crack subjected to an arbitrary tangential traction and the corresponding contact problem, using a method developed by Green. The method is applied by way of illustration to Mindlin’s problem of the tangential compliance of elastic spheres in contact and to the penny-shaped crack in uniform shear and in torsion about a diametral axis.

Interface Cracks

-Properties of elastic solutions to interface crack problems are discussed in both the open formulation, in which the crack faces are assumed to be traction-free and interpenetration is permitted, and the unilateral formulation, where a contact zone is generally established adjacent to the crack tips. It is shown that if the contact zone is sufficiently small compared with the other dimensions ...

Mapping Flat Cracks onto Penny-shaped Cracks, with Application to Somewhat Circular Tensile Cracks

Consider a three-dimensional homogeneous isotropic elastic solid containing a flat pressurized crack, fi. The problem of finding the resulting stress distribution can be reduced to a hypersingular integral equation over Q for the crack-opening displacement. Here, this equation is transformed into a similar equation over a circular region D, using a conformal mapping between Q and D. This new eq...

DISCUSSION ON THE PAPER "A NOTE ON THE CRACK-PLANE STRESS FIELD METHOD FOR ANALYSING SIFs AND ITS APPLICATION TO A CONCENTRIC PENNY-SHAPED CRACK IN A CIRCULAR CYLINDER OPENED UP BY CONSTANT PRESSURE" by Wang Qizhi*

Recently my attention has been drawn to the above-mentioned article in which Dr. Qizhi employed the so-called section method for deriving an approximate analytical expression for the SIF for a penny-shaped crack in an inf'mitely long cylinder subjected to uniform axial load. The method is widely used in problems of structural mechanics. Probably Parton and Morozov first employed this method in ...

Effects of interfacial friction on flaw tolerant adhesion between two dissimilar elastic solids

Flaw tolerance refers to a state in which a pre-existing crack-like flaw does not propagate even as the material is stretched to failure near its theoretical strength. Such an optimal scenario can be achieved when the characteristic length scale is reduced to below a critical value. So far, the critical conditions to achieve flaw tolerance have been discussed mostly for homogeneous materials or...

The Penny-Shaped Interface Crack With Heat Flow

A solution is given for the thermal stresses due to a penny-shaped crack at the interface between dissimilar materials loaded in tension for the case where the heat flux is into the material with higher distortivity. Regions of separation and perfect thermal contact are developed at the crack faces. A harmonic potential function representation is used to reduce the problem to a three-part bound...
